If your property is too large for a single heat pump to meet your heating and hot water needs, consider using a cascaded control system with multiple heat pumps. 

What is a cascaded heat pump system? 

A cascaded heat pump system refers to a set up where multiple heat pump units work in collaboration to meet the heating and hot water needs of a property. These individual heat pump units can be configured to operate simultaneously or assigned separatly to heating and hot water 

How a cascaded heat pump's works 

Cascaded heat pumps are designed to have a single control panel that manages the entire installation. When the temperature outside is warmer, only one heat pump is needed to heat the property efficiently. However, as it gets colder, the second unit may be required to supply either hot water or additional heating, if needed. 

Since there is only one control system, the heat and hot water requirements can be managed and divided between the two heat pumps, ensuring they operate as efficiently as possible. This means that sometimes one heat pump may provide the heating duty while the other supplies domestic hot water. At other times, both units may only provide heating, or one may be switched off completely. 

Cascaded systems are mainly for larger homes. 

If you have a big house and you use a heat pump for heating, you might not get enough heat because your electricity supply can't handle it. In this case, you can use cascaded heat pumps, which means using more than one heat pump to heat your home. 

Most houses in the UK use a type of electricity supply called "single phase," which can only handle a certain amount of electricity. This means that most heat pumps for homes can only provide around 12-14kW of heating power*. So, if you need more heat, you may need to use multiple heat pumps together.  

[*Bigger commercial buildings have "three-phase" electricity supplies, allowing them to use more electricity and larger heat pumps. One option may be to speak with your energy supplier to understand the cost of upgrading to three-phase for your home so you can install a bigger heat pump.] 

There is another option called a hybrid heat pump, which uses a backup boiler or another heating source to provide heat when it's very cold outside.
