Their main product, the Daikin Altherma is a domestic heating and hot water system and is based on the technology of air source heat pumps (ASHP). A cost-effective and flexible alternative to the traditional fossil fuel burners, Altherma is perfect for those who are conscious of their environmental contribution. Daikin guarantee this 3 in 1 system has the ability to produce hot water and also cooling spaces. Offering maximum comfort, the whole year round, Altherma is truly adaptable to the consumer's needs. Available in various styles including a Monobloc, High Temperature and Hybrid version, there are solutions to suit every home.
Heat pumps work using a principle known as vapour compression or refrigerant cycle. Working in the same way as a refrigerator in the kitchen but in reverse. Daikin’s air to water heat pump extracts renewable heat from the outside air. Consisting of a closed circuit that contains a refrigerant, a thermodynamic cycle is created through evaporation, condensation, compression and expansion. The heat pump part of the system ‘pumps’ heat from a low to high-temperature level. This heat is then transferred via a heat exchanger to the hot water system and to the hot water cylinder. This system can heat underfloor heating, radiators and many more standard heating devices.
Daikin Altherma has a high conversion output by which for every 1kW of electrical input it is able to deliver up to 5kW of usable heat making it superior to most others on the market. Altherma’s superiority is mainly due to its inverter technology and weather compensation that is built-in as standard. The invertor control allows Altherma to fully moderate the heating capacity of the system by reducing compressor speed. This means Altherma only ever produces the exact amount of heat required by the user so overall will consume less energy.
A truly sophisticated built-in part of the Altherma is its ability to compensate for the weather outside. As part of its control ability, Altherma reacts to the outside temperature. So if the outside temperature increases it can control the temperature inside the home by reducing requirements through flow temperature in whatever heating devices are used. While being incredibly useful in optimising usage, this concept also has the ability to save up to 30% in energy costs when compared to devices that do not have weather compensation.
Altherma’s ability to only use the energy it requires through its compressor technology is just the top of the advantages the Altherma brings when installed. By modulating its capacity there is no need for a bulky buffer tank to be installed. Altherma’s start current is always lower than the run current of the system is installed within so there is no high energy usage on startup. In an installation that is perfectly suited to both domestic and commercial installation, all units are single-phase and an on/off cycling of the compressor will ultimately extend the life of the compressor.
